Ordering Perfume from the US: Customs, Tax and Fees
Published on 30.09.2026
A Tempting Price From an American Shop
Every so often, a US retailer lists the exact same bottle for noticeably less than any shop in Europe. Before you order, it is worth looking closely at what gets added once the package actually reaches you. Anyone ordering perfume from the US for the first time is often surprised that the final price rarely matches the number on the product page.
Three things typically get added to an order from outside the EU: import VAT, possible customs duty, and, depending on the courier, a clearance fee. Here is how that adds up, and what a real offer actually costs once everything is included.
Import VAT From the First Euro
Since July 2021, EU import VAT generally applies to shipments from outside the EU starting from the very first euro of value, the old exemption threshold no longer exists. The rate applied is the standard VAT rate of your destination country, charged on the value of the goods, shipping, and any customs duty. That applies the same way whether the shop ships from New York or from Los Angeles, the exact US location makes no difference.
Customs Duty: Flat Rate or Value Based
Since July 1, 2026, a flat customs duty of 3 euros per item applies to shipments up to 150 euros in value, the earlier duty free allowance for that range has ended. Above 150 euros, the duty rate depends on the value of the goods and the country of origin, and it would not be reliable to state one fixed figure here since it can change. Most perfume orders from the US stay under that 150 euro mark, so in practice, the flat 3 euro duty is the one to plan for.
A Real Example
Numbers like these are easier to picture with an actual offer, so here is one from our own database, calculated exactly as it appears today:

The exact figures always depend on the specific offer, the exchange rate on the day you order, and the courier used. The example above shows the rough scale of tax and duty you can expect on a US order.
The Rule for Your Country
The exact tax rate and customs rule that apply to you depend on where you are ordering to:
Import rule for Ireland
Up to a value of 150,00 € a flat customs duty of 3,00 € applies, above that the duty depends on the value of the goods. Import VAT of 23 % is also charged on the value, shipping and duty.

Courier and Clearance Fees
On top of tax and duty, some couriers charge their own fee for declaring the shipment to customs and paying the charges upfront on your behalf. Whether that applies, and how much it costs, depends on the courier and the shop: some retailers ship DDP (duty paid) and already include everything in the listed price, others do not. It is worth budgeting for this fee even if it does not always apply.
Perfume Is Often Treated as Hazardous Cargo
Perfume contains alcohol, which means it is frequently classed as a flammable liquid for international shipping. That limits which shipping methods are available and is one reason some US shops do not ship perfume to certain countries, or only offer more expensive shipping options for it. If a shop does not deliver to your country at all, this classification is usually why, not a lack of interest in your market.
What the Full Comparison Actually Shows
A low sticker price from the US is only half the story. Once you add shipping, import VAT, possible customs duty, and any courier fee, you get the real total price that can fairly be compared with a European offer. On our fragrance pages, that total is already calculated and shown next to each offer, so you do not need to work it out yourself.
